TORONTO (May 29, 2008) - The Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL) celebrated the past season last evening at the Hockey Hall of Fame at its third annual Awards Celebration.
The event was hosted by AM 640’s News Director Stephanie Smyth and Toronto Maple Leaf legend Wendel Clark was on hand to give the Key Note speech and assist with the award presentations. Over 230 guests attended this event.
Promittere Cup Banners were presented to the Clubs that had teams finish first place in each of their respective divisions and Championship Banners were presented to the Clubs that had teams win their respective Playoff Championships. Of note were the 7 Promittere Cup Banners and 4 Championship Banners won by the North York Knights.
Individual Awards were presented to a number of recipients. They included: Cooper Humanitarian Award – Jordan McNeil, Humberview Huskies Gus Gordon Memorial Official’s Award – Ben Venditti Ray Heslop Juvenile Dedication Award – Peter Cappadocia, Humberview Huskies Herb Ebisuzaki Coaching Award – Tom McDonnell, East Ender Ticats Len Barrett House League Scholarship Award – Stephen Vescio, Downsview Beavers Frank Smith Midget “A” Scholarship Award – Chris McGuire, Toronto Eagles Norman Sharp Midget “AA” Scholarship Award – Antonio Lombardi, Hillcrest Summits George F. Dufton Midget “AAA” Scholarship Award – Adam Blando, Toronto Young Nationals St. Michael’s Majors Minor Midget “AAA” Scholarship Award – Frederick Hamilton, Toronto Marlboros
In addition, a GTHL player was presented with a Special Recognition Award to recognize inspirational courage displayed in overcoming adversity, while maintaining a dedication and commitment to competing in hockey. That recipient was Sean Cordes of the Hillcrest Summits.
“The GTHL is proud to be able to recognize and honour a few of the thousands of players and volunteers who contribute to our communities” said GTHL President, John Gardner. “When you meet and speak with the young players that were presented with the scholarship and special recognition awards, you see how much of a positive influence the volunteers in our game have on the lives of these young people that will allow them to be a success in whatever path in life they choose to pursue.”
The Greater Toronto Hockey League is the largest amateur hockey league in the world. There are approximately 40,000 children and youth registered in the GTHL annually.
