| 2008 Royal Bank Cup - Canada's Top Teams Inch Closer To Royal Bank Cup |
|
| |
By Sam Laskaris /
There will be at least two and possibly three Ontario-based entries at this year’s Royal Bank Cup.
As hosts, the Cornwall Colts, members of the Central Junior A Hockey League (CJHL), are guaranteed a spot in the national Junior A tournament, scheduled for May 3 to 11.
The Colts have been idle since losing their CJHL best-of-seven, quarter-final series 4-1 against the Smiths Falls Bears in mid-March.
Cornwall is hoping it can compete with those at the nationals. The Colts were not exactly dominant in their own league.
Cornwall did have a respectable 31-24-1-4 regular season mark. The Colts placed second in their five-club Robinson Division but were sixth in the overall standings of their 12-squad league.
The five-team Royal Bank Cup will also feature the Ontario side that captures the Dudley Hewitt Cup, which will be staged April 22 to 26 in Newmarket.
The four-squad Dudley Hewitt Cup will feature the host Newmarket Hurricanes, who compete in the Provincial Junior A Hockey League.
Also taking part in the Dudley Hewitt Cup will be the eventual Provincial league champions. The Markham Waxers and Oakville Blades both advanced to the league final.
The champions from the Northern Ontario Junior A Hockey League (NOJHL) and the Superior International Junior Hockey League (SIJHL) will also participate at the Newmarket tourney.
The NOJHL finalists were the Sudbury Jr. Wolves and the Abitibi Eskimos. And the SIJHL championship featured the Fort William North Stars against the Dryden Ice Dogs.
Meanwhile, the Royal Bank Cup could conceivably also include another Ontario entry—one of Cornwall’s league rivals—either Smiths Falls or the Pembroke Lumber Kings.
That’s because these two squads had advanced to the CJHL final. The eventual champ of this best-of-seven series moves on to the four-club Fred Page Cup tournament, set for April 21 to 27 in New Glasgow, N.S.
The Fred Page Cup champs then move on to the Royal Bank Cup.
Besides the host Weeks Crushers and the CJHL champs, the Fred Page Cup tourney will also include the Maritime Junior A Hockey League playoff champs as well as the winners of Quebec’s Junior A circuit.
The Yarmouth Mariners and Woodstock Slammers were battling for the Maritime title while the Quebec final featured Les Inouk de Granby versus L’Action de Joliette.
The two other squads that will be Cornwall-bound will be the Doyle Cup and Anavet Cup champions.
The Doyle Cup will be presented to the winners of a series between the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) and the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL).
The two squads battling it out in the BCHL final were the Nanaimo Clippers and the Penticton Vees. And the AJHL championship was being contested by the Camrose Kodiaks and the Fort McMurray Oil Barons.
The Anavet Cup will be decided with a series between the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) and the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL) champions.
The two combatants in the SJHL final were the Humboldt Broncos and the Kindersley Klippers. And those battling it out for the MJHL crown were the Portage Terriers and the Winnipeg Saints. |
