The CJHL scoring race, between a sniper and a set-up man, is expected to go right down to the wire.
Pembroke Lumber Kings’ right winger Andy Starzcewski was leading the league in scoring in mid-February.
Starzcewski had racked up 95 points, including 44 goals, in 55 games this season. But Brockville Braves’ centre Mike Byrd was right on his tail with 94 points, including a league-high 71 assists.
And most betting men would probably put some money on Byrd to win the scoring crown.
That’s because Starzcewski only had five regular season matches remaining to add to his totals. But the Byrd-led Braves had eight games left in their schedule.
Meanwhile, Starzcewski and the Lumber Kings were also in a close battle as they were attempting to hold onto first place over-all in the league standings.
Pembroke was leading the Yzerman Division, and the over-all CJHL standings, as it had accumulated 84 points through 55 matches.
But the Nepean Raiders, who also compete in the Yzerman Division, were just four points back of the Lumber Kings. And Nepean had also played one game less than Pembroke.
With their 84 points, the Lumber Kings already knew they would end up with more points than the Robinson Division leading Cumberland Grads, who had 73 points in 55 games. |
