It won’t be as big as some previous years. But the long-running Streetsville Tigers Fall Hockey Tournament is once again expected to feature some top-notch competition.
The tournament, now in its 42nd year, is scheduled for Nov. 6 to 8.
A total of 41 AA clubs are expected to take part in the event.
Organizers had originally hoped to have 64 teams in eight divisions at the tournament.
But in early October, they were forced to cancel the Atom, Peewee and Bantam groupings.
At the time, only a couple of teams had registered to play in each of those divisions.
“There was a lack of interest, which is a sign of the times,” said tournament chairperson Debbie Leo.
Though tournament officials had cancellations at the event in previous years, Leo believes this is the first time that the plug was pulled on three divisions. “This year has been sort of a headache,” Leo added.
The tournament, however, will operate minor atom, minor peewee, minor bantam, minor midget and midget divisions. The majority of the participants will be representing squads from across Ontario. But there will also be a half-dozen American entries taking part. There are four teams coming in from the state of New York while a pair of others from Michigan will also attend. Tournament matches will be staged at three facilities: Streetsville’s Vic Johnston Community Centre, Mississauga’s Hershey Centre and Canlan Ice Sports in Etobicoke. All of the championship finals on Nov. 8 will be at Canlan Ice Sports. |
