Officials with the Mississauga North Stars’ organization are already deeming their fall tournament a success.
And that’s even before a single game has been played.
The club had operated the Mississauga North Stars Classic the past 11 years. As for this season, the event has a new moniker, the Scotiabank Cup.
Tournament chairman Peter Johnson is thrilled his organization was able to secure a major Canadian bank as the event’s title sponsor. Very few other tournaments are fortunate enough to land a title sponsor.
“I think it’s very difficult,” he said of obtaining the sponsorship. “It’s something we’ve been trying to make happen for quite a while.”
The Scotiabank Cup will be held Nov. 20 to 22. A total of 62 AA teams will take part, competing in eight divisions ranging from minor atom to midget.
The list of entrants includes two American squads. There is a Buffalo club that will take part in the Atom grouping. And a Detroit-area team will participate in the Midget division.
The host North Stars will be represented in all eight categories.
Johnson is confident several of the host teams will fare well in their own event. The North Stars’ peewee and midget clubs both won their GTHL championships a year ago at the Minor Peewee and Minor Midget levels.
“They’re very strong,” Johnson said of the two North Stars’ teams. “I think they’re both better this year.” Johnson said the organization’s Atom and Minor Bantam clubs are also faring well thus far this season, making them contenders for championships in their divisions. |
