Submitted story / The Barrie Canadian First Financial Minor Midget AA Colts captured the 2009 Scotiabank Cup hosted by the Mississauga North Stars last month at Westwood Arenas in Etobicoke.
The Colts faced the Rideau-St. Lawrence Kings in the finals, and quickly found themselves down 2-0. The Colts rallied with three straight goals to take a 3-2 lead. Rideau tied the game at 3-3, but the Colts continued to press. Just seconds after having a goal disallowed, the Colts found the back of the net with a point shot putting the Colts up 4-3. The Colts weathered the final half-minute of 6-on-5 play – as Rideau had pulled their goalie – to clinch the championship.
The Colts opened divisional play Friday evening with a 5-3 win over Eastern Ontario. After a 5-0 win over the York Toros, the Colts played the host Mississauga North Stars with the winner moving on to the semifinals. The Stars scored early on a 5-on-3 powerplay to take a 1-0 lead. A breakdown in communication gave the Stars an easy goal late in the period to take a 2-0 lead after one period. The Colts got on the board early in the second, and got on a roll, notching the next three goals to take a hard-earned 4-2 victory.
The semifinal competition was the GTHL West-leading Etobicoke Canucks. The Colts and Canucks played a physical game, and finished with a close 3-1 win for the Colts. |
