Carleton-Ottawa Rivalry Heats Up as Coolidge Jumps Ship to Ravens

By Mike Beasley /

The Ontario University Athletics (OUA) will welcome another member to its men’s hockey family this fall.

The Nipissing University Lakers will begin play this October as an official CIS member as the 19th men’s varsity hockey team in the very competitive OUA.

Men’s university hockey continues to grow throughout the province on a regular basis with new teams sprouting up in rinks and campuses on a regular basis.

Two seasons ago, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) Ridgebacks in Oshawa hit the ice for the first time in school history.

Nipissing University is situated in North Bay, Ont., approximately five hours north of Toronto, four hours northwest of Ottawa and two hours east of Sudbury.

The Lakers will play a 28-game regular season schedule with 14 home games at the historic, North Bay Memorial Gardens.

Nipissing will compete in the East Division of the OUA’s East Conference alongside Queen’s University, Royal Military College, Ryerson and the University of Toronto.

North Bay-native and Nipissing graduate Mike McParland will guide the inaugural edition of the Lakers after being named the team’s head coach on Sept. 30, 2008.

McParland brings over 20 years of coaching experience to the Lakers after a professional playing career in Europe.

Prior to heading overseas, McParland suited up in the OHL with the Sudbury Wolves followed by a four-year stay with the University of Guelph, twice winning the OUAA championships and being named Guelph’s Athlete of the Year in 1978/79.

“I’m excited and honoured to be the first head coach of the Lakers and to be returning home to North Bay,” McParland said on the OUA’s website.

“This is a great opportunity to develop a top notch program from the ground up. My experience in hockey has prepared me for this opportunity and I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

The Lakers main training camp will run from Sept. 4 to 12 followed by an exhibition game at home against the University of Ottawa Gee Gees on the Sept. 19.

The first year team will then head south to Toronto in late September for a two-day tournament at York University. The Lakers will battle against the host York Lions, Toronto Varsity Blues and Ryerson Rams.

Nipissing’s first regular season game is scheduled for Oct. 2 when the Queen’s Golden Gaels travel to North Bay to begin a new chapter in the university’s athletics program.
